About the Artist – Grant Wood (1891–1942)
Grant Wood was an American painter best known for capturing the spirit of rural America during the Great Depression. Born and raised in Iowa, he had a deep connection to Midwestern life and traditions, which became the heart of his artistic vision.
Although American Gothic (1930) is his most famous work, Wood’s broader portfolio celebrates the everyday people and landscapes of the American Midwest with detail, warmth, and a touch of satire. He was a leading figure in the Regionalist art movement, which focused on depicting real American life rather than European ideals.
His style combined realism with a slightly exaggerated, almost storybook quality; a blend that makes his paintings so striking as jigsaw puzzles. Wood’s ability to portray character and landscape with such clarity and symbolism has cemented his place in American art history.
