Malaga Town by Donna Flowers-Dorning
Our July Jigsaw Club release transports you straight to the sun-soaked streets of southern Spain. Malaga Town is the latest piece from returning featured artist Donna Flowers-Dorning, capturing all the heat, bustle, colour and culture of Malaga's old town.
Set against a deep twilight sky, the scene is framed by swaying palms and a jacaranda tree in full purple bloom, with pastel pink, yellow and blue Andalusian buildings and wrought iron balconies rising behind a bustling street of passers by. On the table in front, a glass of sangria sits alongside an Aperol spritz, a bottle of local wine labelled with a flamenco dancer, a bowl of green olives on a hand-painted Spanish plate, sliced bread and a rich olive-topped pizza. Prickly pear cacti, a terracotta urn, a black hat, and a small Picasso inspired sketch complete the still life, all painted with Donna's signature vibrant detail.
Inspired by Donna's own trip to the city, this piece invites you to picture yourself pausing for a breather from sightseeing, cold sangria, Aperol or beer in hand, with olives, bread and pizza close by. It's a jigsaw designed to spark a little holiday joy and that unmistakably nostalgic Spanish town feel, wherever you're piecing it together.
About the Artist
A lifelong creative, Donna Flowers-Dorning studied art at college before going on to study fashion at UCLAN in Preston. While she has always painted for pleasure, it was during lockdown that she developed her 'Still Life' series, drawing on patterns, plants, books, nostalgic food and drink, views and artwork. Donna's work is known for its vibrant detail, often incorporating text and pattern to create rich, expressive compositions, and is currently exhibited at Heart Gallery in Hebden Bridge, Sweet Magnolias in Hay-on-Wye and Still Life in Ulverston.
As with every Jigsaw Club release, Malaga Town is available for one calendar month only, then it's gone for good.
