The Haywain – Jigsaw Club Exclusive
This month's Jigsaw Club release is a timeless scene of the English countryside featuring The Haywain by John Constable – one of the most celebrated landscape paintings in history.
Painted in 1821, this iconic scene captures a summer’s day beside the River Stour in Suffolk, where a wooden hay cart wades through the water near Willy Lott’s cottage – a real building that still stands to this day. Constable knew this view intimately; it was part of his childhood, and he painted it not just with his brush, but with his heart.
What makes this painting so special?
It's not just the sweeping skies and the nostalgic calm; it’s the story behind it. Created in London from years of countryside sketches and memory, The Haywain was Constable’s quiet rebellion against the Industrial Revolution. While other artists painted smoke, steam and factories, Constable chose stillness, trees, and tradition.
Though it was originally titled Landscape: Noon, it became affectionately known as The Haywain thanks to a friend. It didn’t sell when first exhibited – but it stopped visiting French artists in their tracks. One French painter, Géricault, returned to Paris “quite stunned.” The painting would go on to influence a generation of artists across Europe.
Now, for a limited time only, you can bring this masterpiece into your home – and piece together a little slice of history.
Available exclusively to Jigsaw Club members for one month only.
