Fun beach games for kids often take a bit of creative thinking. You want to keep them entertained between dips in the waves, without an unplanned beach scavenger hunt for all the toys that end up scattered across the sand afterwards. Doing the right activities can be a fun way of creating memories for the whole family.
At Happy Puzzle, we have a wide selection of beach games to help you enjoy your time outdoors this summer. Plus a big section of no-equipment ideas at the end, for when you're after a bit of variety.

No Equipment Beach Games
Want a mix of no-equipment games to space between the above? These don’t require any items you won’t already find on the beach.
Beach Treasure Hunt
Bring a small bag of real coins (or plastic ones) or a few small shells, bury them in a marked area of damp sand and let the kids dig with their hands or kids' shovels. Draw up a proper treasure map first if you want to make an afternoon of it. Works for seashell hunts too: give the kids a list of shells to find (shape, colour, size, etc.) and turn it into a competition. Whoever finds the most varied items wins.
Sandcastle Contest
Split into teams, set a time limit (30 minutes is plenty), and let someone neutral judge on height, decoration and creativity. Kids under 6 love a "best decorated" category. Older kids get competitive about height and stability.
Beach Bowling
Line up empty bottles, plastic cups or buried shells as pins. Roll a beach ball at them from a set distance. Rebuild between rounds, keep score, hand out a small prize for the highest total. Works on wet or dry sand.
Water Bucket Relay
Two teams, two empty buckets on the beach, one full bucket of sea water each. Kids run from the sea to the bucket with a cup of water, then pass the cup along. Whoever fills their empty bucket first wins. Chaotic, exciting, and will definitely bring out their competitive side.
Rock Pooling
If your beach has rock pools at low tide, take a small bucket and check them out. Kids can identify crabs, small fish, seaweed and shells. Genuinely educational, quietly satisfying, and one of the best beach activities for kids who prefer nature to noise.
How to Pick the Right Beach Games for Kids
-
Match the age: Little kids want simple, physical and clearly winnable. Older children and teens handle real competition, longer rules and a bit of strategy. Mixing both? Look for games you can even out with a handicap, so the little ones aren't out of their depth.
-
Sand-proof vs sand-sensitive: Some games love sand, others need a hard surface. A ring toss doesn't mind either way. A pocket brainteaser needs a towel. Match the game to where they'll actually want to play.
-
Solo, two players or the whole beach: For siblings, two-player games work fine. For big family days, get something four or more people can rotate through without anyone getting bored waiting their turn.
-
Wet, dry or both: Anything near the water needs to be waterproof enough to survive being waterlogged. Games for the picnic blanket need to be sand-friendly so that you aren’t taking heaps of sand home with you.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best beach games for a 4 year old?
For year olds, keep it simple and physical. Ring Toss, sand angels and basic sandcastles all work brilliantly. Avoid anything with small pieces or complicated rules.
What beach games can we play without any equipment?
Quite a few. Sandcastle contests, finding shells, beach limbo with a pool noodle, treasure hunts, and beach bowling with empty bottles are all fun activities you can include in your itinerary for the day.
Which beach games work in wet sand?
Wet sand is actually better for most beach games than dry sand. Sandcastles need damp sand to hold shape. Ring toss stays put in wet sand. Only avoid card games and anything paper-based near the tide line.
Do any of your outdoor games work on sand?
Yes. Tossit works on any hard surface you can find on a beach (cool boxes, buckets, wooden posts). Ring Toss, Cornhole and Pickleball all work on packed sand.
